Distinguished and Famous people from Wycheproof
🏉 Merv Keane
Merv Keane grew up in a large farming family at Wycheproof and was recruited from the local club by Richmond. Across 238 senior games he became a dependable defender and a member of the 1973, 1974 and 1980 premiership teams. Later work in coaching and recruiting extended his contribution beyond his playing career. Richmond recognised him in its Team of the Century and Hall of Fame. The local beginnings belong to a player better remembered for beating opponents consistently than for spectacular flourishes, a useful reminder that reliability can produce a distinguished sporting career.
🏉 Greg Kennedy
Greg Kennedy reached Carlton through Eaglehawk after earlier years in the Wycheproof district. A high-leaping forward, he made an immediate impression in 1972 and led the club's goalkicking, including a twelve-goal match against Hawthorn. Finals brought disappointment when he missed selection for the premiership decider. Injury later interrupted the promise of his early career. His story therefore contains a striking debut season alongside the uncertainties of elite football. Wycheproof's connection is the country pathway that preceded Eaglehawk and the long pursuit by Carlton's recruiters.
🤝 Mancel Giddings
Mancel Gray Giddings received the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2025 after extensive service to Wycheproof. Fire-brigade volunteering formed part of a much wider record that included the Men's Shed, schools, agricultural show and local sport. Friends from the town, including Merv Keane, attended the presentation at Government House. The recognition brings attention to the patient organising that keeps small communities active: helping at events, maintaining clubs and turning up when work needs doing. His contribution belongs firmly to Wycheproof's everyday civic life, alongside the town's more widely publicised sporting names.
